Sweden has officially become the 32nd member of NATO.

This was stated in the relevant protocol of accession published on the US State Department’s website.

On March 11, the Swedish flag is scheduled to be raised over the Alliance’s headquarters in Brussels.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson previously stated that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had informed him of all NATO member states adopting the accession protocol and extending an invitation to Sweden to join the North Atlantic Treaty.

The White House also confirmed Sweden’s accession, highlighting that Sweden’s presence in NATO would enhance the security of the United States and its allies.

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in May 2022, both Sweden and Finland concluded that joining NATO would be the most effective way to deter aggression. Finland officially joined the Alliance in April 2023, while Sweden’s application was delayed by Turkey and Hungary.
